The 'Manager, Data Center Engineering' is responsible for leading a team in support of all physical facilities infrastructure in the Data Center. This role will ensure that all equipment and support systems are in a high state of readiness at all times. In addition to a high level of developed competencies in building and managing facilities teams you will need detailed technical knowledge (mechanical and electrical) relevant to a data center or industrial, manufacturing or military environment. The Engineering Manager is also responsible for capacity management and contractor’s management and overall responsibility for the H&S of those working in Rackspace premises
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure that facilities problems are identified and repaired quickly
- Hire and develop the skills of an internal team to scale in support of facilities equipment
- Negotiate and manage vendor contracts, service level agreements (SLAs), etc
- Work towards continual improvement in operational efficiencies, and occasionally travel to other regions to facilitate global cooperation
- Develop an effective PPM schedule and ensure the checks are performed according to the manufacturer specifications and RS internal controls by either the specialist contractor or RS internal Engineering staff
- Maintain available capacity by ensuring new areas of the DC are built well ahead of schedule
- Adhere to the RS Change management guidelines
- Occasionally support the Facility management team in the HQ by providing resources and technical expertise
- Maintain the DCs office spaces in excellent working order
- Ensure the security systems are in perfect working order and that the security team is delivering an efficient service to RS and our customers
- Coach and Mentor the Engineering team members and provide leadership and guidance
- Effectively manage the contractors on site to ensure adherence to RS H&S and code of conduct
- Responsible for adhering to company security policies and procedure as directed
- 100% uptime on cooling and power
- Ensure 24/7/365 cover is maintained on site by managing the team’s holiday and training plans and ensuring the team scales with the business
- Maintenance contracts are in place and renewed/updated with plenty of time. Service delivery meetings are to be held regularly to ensure value for money and observance of the agreed SLAs is obtained
- The PPM schedule is developed for the entire year ahead and contractors/resources are lined up to perform all the activities in it
- 9 months worth of UPS and Cooling capacity is available at any point. New installations are performed in a timely manner to allow the business to grow
- The HQ offices are supported when required without affecting the operations of the DCs
- The office space and services in the DC buildings are always presentable and in perfect working order
- The security systems are maintained to World Class standards and the security team is managed and their service reviewed regularly
- Regular face to face meetings are held with all the Engineering team members to make sure personal development plans exists and are followed and to provide guidance and advice on performance and personal development/career advance
- Contractors’ method statements are reviewed and PTW issued in accordance with H&S laws. Supervision is maintained at all times to ensure they adhere to best practices
Knowledge
- Exceptional people skills and the ability to motivate and lead a team
- The ability to create an engaging working environment and atmosphere
- Significant experience as an Engineering/DC Manager in a data center or related environment (industrial, pharmaceutical, manufacturing or military)
- Experience in management of vendors/contractors performing installation, maintenance or upgrade work in a data center or related environment
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Mechanical or Electrical Engineering related degree qualifications are advantageous
- Technical competence in electrical, mechanical and cooling principals (inc. feeders, transformers, generators, switchgear, UPS systems, ATS/STS units, PDU units, chillers, air handling units, and CRAC units) including strong familiarity with UK safety regulations and controls advantageous
