Interviews and onboarding are conducted virtually, a part of being a distributed-first company.To help our teams work together effectively, this role requires you to be located in the Netherlands, the UK, Germany, France or Poland.Atlassian is looking for Principal Database Engineer to join one of our EU-based engineering teams.You will join the Jira Cloud team, owning the Jira Cloud Issue Search capability that is fundamental for several Jira main experiences like Scrum and Agile Boards, navigation, findability, Jira Work Management and others. The team is focused on improving the scalability of the current architecture to meet the demand of our largest customers on their migration to Jira Cloud. This work enables decomposition efforts to build a highly scalable Jira Issue Search engine.As a Principal Software Engineer, you'll act as a technical leader with your teams and help define the tactical approach and build the architectural vision behind our products. You will work with other Issue Search, Jira Platform, experience teams, architects, engineering, product, and program managers. As we use a "you build it, you run it" (YBIYRI) approach in all Cloud teams, you'll demonstrate excellence in operational maturity, and lead the team to define and achieve reliability, scalability, and latency goals. You will report directly to the Engineering Manager.

• Guide projects independently, from technical design to launch.
• Design infrastructure solutions for scalability, reliability, high availability, performance, security, software maintainability, and operational excellence.
• Inspire creativity by coming up with new ideas for our products and processes
• Grow in proficiency and help to grow other developers.
• Be a mentor and lead by example to help build an awesome team.
• Contribute to code reviews and documentation and take on complex bug fixes.
• Handle difficult scalability and performance challenges and find new better solutions.

What we expect from you

• Min. 5 years of professional experience and min. 3 years of Postgresql database experience.
• experience working with high-volume OLTP databases
• Deep expertise in scalability and performance tuning, good understanding of Postgresql internals.
• Good knowledge of Java (or other OOP language).
• Architectural understanding of web applications.
• Knowledge in some back-end technologies such as Spring, Hibernate, SQL.
• Expertise in full text search engines would be a good advantage
• Have knowledge of writing robust and reliable systems.
• Can ensure a high bar of performance, quality, and security while developing a product.
